Addis Ababa: African Peace Conference addresses current security challenges facing the Continent

Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) 26 Nov 2024– The African Peace Conference was held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, focusing on the current security challenges that hinder the continent’s development and economic growth.

Organized by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Peace, the conference was attended by African ministers of interior and peace, including Sahrawi Minister of Interior Brahim Bachir Beila.

Discussions aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the continent’s security issues, which stem from numerous crises preventing progress in development, economics, and politics, as well as to explore effective solutions.

The conference also highlighted successful models from certain countries in resolving conflicts and disputes, demonstrating pathways toward development and economic growth through political and social stability. For instance, Ethiopia showcased its approach to building sustainable community peace.

African ministers exchanged perspectives and shared experiences on fostering peace and prosperity in their countries. Discussions covered a wide range of challenges, including terrorism, coups, inter-ethnic conflicts, poverty, famine, displacement, refugee crises, and natural disasters such as extreme weather and earthquakes.

These issues have left the continent grappling for effective solutions to overcome obstacles to development and prosperity.

The conference concluded with several recommendations, offering countries insights into the sources of stagnation and actionable strategies to resolve internal and external challenges.

Delegates also took part in bilateral meetings to exchange expertise and participated in tours and site visits to various facilities and infrastructure in Addis Ababa.
