Parliament

The Sahrawi National Assembly (Sahrawi Parliament) serves as the legislative body of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), operating under the guidance of the nation’s Constitution.

Established initially as the Provisional National Assembly in November 1975 by members of the Polisario Front and Sahrawi representatives of the Spanish-constituted Council of Representatives, the Sahrawi National Assembly played a pivotal role in the formation of the SADR. This occurred shortly after the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic on February 27, 1976, by Polisario leader El-Ouali Mustapha Sayed. It was within this context that the Assembly emerged as the inaugural parliament of the newly formed nation.

At the Polisario’s III General Popular Congress held from August 26 to 30, 1976, a newly elected membership was formally instated, solidifying the Sahrawi National Assembly’s status as the primary legislative body. Comprising 53 seats, the SNA operates as a unicameral institution, with members elected through a democratic process every four years.

The Sahrawi National Assembly serves as a cornerstone of the SADR’s democratic governance structure, embodying the collective will and aspirations of the Sahrawi people. Through its legislative functions, the Assembly addresses key issues concerning governance, lawmaking, and policy formulation, ensuring the representation and empowerment of all citizens within the republic.

As the democratic foundation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, the Sahrawi National Assembly continues to uphold the principles of justice, equality, and self-determination, striving to advance the interests and welfare of the Sahrawi people while fostering national unity and solidarity.
