President Brahim Ghali Arrives in Kampala to Participate in AU CAADP Summit

Sahrawi President Brahim Ghali, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, arrived early Saturday morning in Kampala, Uganda, to participate in the African Union’s Extraordinary Summit on the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), held in Kampala, Uganda, from January 9 to 11, 2025, which focuses on the continent’s agricultural future.

The President was welcomed at Entebbe International Airport by Ugandan officials, led by Frank Tumwebaze, Uganda’s Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries. A ceremonial guard of honor from the Ugandan Republican Guard greeted the President.

The summit, held under the theme “One Voice, One Land,” seeks to harness Africa’s vast agricultural potential through sustainable resource management. It aims to develop and adopt a 10-year CAADP Action Plan (2026–2035). This includes the issuance of the “Kampala Declaration,” a guiding document to accelerate agricultural transformation and ensure food security while fostering economic growth, poverty reduction, and job creation.

The Extraordinary Summit will address critical strategies for achieving food self-sufficiency across the continent, building on the 2014 Malabo Declaration on Accelerated Agricultural Growth and Transformation. Discussions will explore the post-Malabo agenda, charting a path toward resilient food systems that enhance livelihoods and drive sustainable economic development.

President Ghali is accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Mohamed Sidati, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fatma Mehdi, Minister of Cooperation, Baba Ahmed Fdeid, Minister of Economic Development, Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, Ambassador to South Africa and AU Affairs Coordinator, Lamine Baali, Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Abdati Breika, Advisor to the Presidency, Salha El Abd, Ambassador and Director of Presidential Protocol, Moussa Blal, Director of African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Taleb Ibrahim Khalil, Director of Agriculture at the Ministry of Economic Development, Mohamed Ali Daf, Chargé d’Affaires at the Sahrawi Embassy in Uganda.

The summit marks a significant opportunity for African leaders to unite under a shared vision for agricultural-led growth and resilience. By the summit’s conclusion, the adoption of the Kampala Declaration and the CAADP Ten-Year Strategy is expected to lay the groundwork for a transformative agricultural agenda across the continent.

President Ghali’s participation underscores the Sahrawi Republic’s commitment to continental solidarity and its active engagement in shaping Africa’s agricultural future.
