Sahrawi Foreign Minister meets Deputy Chairperson of the AUC

– The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Sahrawi Republic, Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, met this Wednesday morning with the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Ambassador Salma Malika Haddadi, at her office in the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.

The meeting reflected the Sahrawi Republic’s commitment to supporting all efforts of the AU Commission aimed at achieving the Union’s objectives and aspirations. The two sides exchanged views on current African issues of mutual concern.

Both parties emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation in line with the founding principles of the African Union, particularly in promoting values of solidarity, the rule of law, and good governance—considered fundamental pillars in the process of building a unified and prosperous Africa.

Accompanying the Sahrawi Minister were Ambassador Lamine Baali, the Sahrawi Republic’s Permanent Representative to the AU, and Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador Malainin Lakhal. The Deputy Chairperson was joined by two ambassadors from her close working team.

This visit forms part of the Sahrawi Foreign Minister’s diplomatic engagements on the sidelines of the AU Executive Council’s extraordinary session, held yesterday at the Union’s headquarters. The session tackled key institutional issues, including the restructuring of AU organs and the completion of elections for leadership positions.

The session also saw Algeria elected to the Peace and Security Council for a three-year term, reinforcing its pivotal role in promoting peace and stability on the continent. Closed meetings additionally addressed appointments to several AU bodies, including the AU’s International Law Commission and the African Space Council.
