Mr. Brahim Ghali, concluded his visit to Ethiopia on 17th February 2025 following his participation in the 38th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, held on the 15th and 16th February in Addis Ababa.
The President was seen off at Bole International Airport by the Ethiopian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Director of Protocol at the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and senior officials from the ministry.
Also were present members of the Sahrawi delegation that participated to the Summit, mainly the Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, Minister Counselor at the Presidency for Diplomatic Affairs, Amb. Lamine Yahiaoui, Permanent Representative to the AU, Amb. Malainin Mohamed, Deputy PR, and Erguibi Adbdula, Media Attache.
The two-day summit, which ended on Sunday, was held under the theme “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.” It focused on outlining Africa’s priorities for 2025 and beyond, as well as mechanisms for implementing the Agenda 2063 development strategy.
President Brahim Ghali arrived in Addis Ababa on Friday, February 14, to take part in the 38th AU Summit, where he was welcomed with official honors at Bole International Airport. His arrival was marked by a distinguished reception, with the Sahrawi national anthem played by the Ethiopian ceremonial band and cultural performances.
The summit, which gathered African leaders at the African Union HQ in Addis Ababa, addressed crucial continental issues, including peace and security, institutional reforms, and economic integration. A key agenda item was the election of a new Chairperson of the African Union Commission, replacing Chadian Moussa Faki, and a new Deputy Chairperson, replacing Rwandan Monique Nsanzabaganwa.
During his address at the summit, President Brahim Ghali called on African leaders to act decisively to prevent further deterioration of the security and political situation in North Africa. He warned that Morocco’s violation of the ceasefire agreement could plunge the region into deeper tensions and emphasized that the Sahrawi Republic and the Polisario Front would not remain passive in the face of ongoing occupation and resource exploitation.
He also reminded AU leaders of the rulings issued by both the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights and the European Court of Justice, which recognize the Sahrawi Republic and the Kingdom of Morocco as two separate and distinct entities. President Ghali condemned the illegal plundering of Sahrawi resources and reaffirmed that the Sahrawi people alone have the right to benefit from their land’s wealth.
The summit concluded with the adoption of key resolutions aimed at strengthening unity and cooperation among African nations, ensuring the continent’s stability, and advancing sustainable development.
